Our favorite aspects of this podcast can be found in Part 2 discussing how engineering the environment in youth sports can help develop youth athletes into well rounded and well mannered athletes. We find it very interesting that kids usually play a particular sport with the same court, equipment, and method of winning as adults do. We can engineer the environment to shape a more well rounded athlete. This reminds us of the “Baby Court” at the Outrigger Canoe Club that has helped develop some of the best beach volleyball players we have on the sand today. Have you heard of Tri Bourne, Taylor Crabb, and Trevor Crabb? Yup, they all played on the baby court. One point that really relates to our culture in sports is the idea that you can win the game but you will lose a player. We really support the idea of shaping the game to be a bit more inclusive for all as well as rewarding good sportsmanship.
